Diversity & Inclusion
As a first-generation Filipino-American and a musician who has traveled the world, Jon has seen firsthand that many people are alienated based on race or ethnicity. He encourages students to embrace multicultural differences.
Facing Adversity
Jon discusses how critical it is to be true to oneself, both when creating music and also in life. That approach won’t always be popular, and there will be adversity, but artists should always stand for fairness and freedom.
A Diverse Society
It’s really important for students to be exposed to different viewpoints and philosophies. Jon points out that any student looking to get into the workforce—regardless of the field—must have the flexibility to adjust to different bosses and methods and to adverse conditions.
Room at the Table
Jon talks about his hope for inclusion, tolerance and acceptance in the world. Much like the diversity we experience in life, people make different types of music, and there is room at the table for every angle. In the end, he believes that artists who take chances will be rewarded.
“It’s important for students to be exposed to different philosophies and ideas. The more diversity and knowledge you have, the more enriched you become. It’s the same with music. And it’s the same with life. ”
