Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Jazz Lab™?
Jazz Lab™ is an exciting program that blends jazz music, science, and creativity to engage students in hands-on learning. It focuses on building 21st-century skills through activities that explore sound, vibrations, and musical expression, inspiring students to think critically and creatively.

2. Who is the Perfect Jazz Lab™ Volunteer?
The ideal Jazz Lab™ volunteer is patient, a great listener, curious, and excited to help students explore new ideas through hands-on activities. Most importantly, you enjoy inspiring others and making a difference! Whether you're an at-home parent, former educator, musician, STEM enthusiast, or simply love learning, your unique talents can have a huge impact.  If YOU are a great listener, patient, and enjoy spending time with young people, then we're looking for YOU!  Please join us!!

3. What will I be doing as a volunteer?
As a Jazz Lab™ volunteer, you'll assist the Jazz Lab™ staff in facilitating activities and work alongside students (our Jazz Lab Techs) during hands-on projects. Your role also includes helping to set up and tear down, distribute lab coats, keep the room organized, and provide general support to the students.

4. Do I need to have a background in music or STEM to volunteer?
No! While a background in music or STEM can be helpful, it’s not required. The most important qualities we’re looking for are enthusiasm, a love for working with kids, and a willingness to learn. We provide training and support to ensure you're comfortable in your role.

5. How much time is required to volunteer?
We’re seeking individuals who can commit to a minimum of four sessions at one school. For example, in October, we will be at a middle school every Tuesday for the entire month. Similarly, every Thursday for a month, we will be at another school.

6. Will I be responsible for heavy lifting?
No! We may ask you to do things like hang lab coats on a rack, or move light materials for an activity. The Jazz Lab™ staff will move any heavy objects.

7. Approximately how many kids are in a session?
Because of the high demand for after-school enrichment, we expect anywhere from 25-30 students in each session.

8. Is Jazz Lab™ at different schools?
Yes. From October 2024 - April 2025, Jazz Lab™ Mobile Pilot will visit (10) Columbus City Schools with a focus on the west side, south side, and east/central

9. What is the engagement schedule for the month of October and November?
October: Every Tuesday (Dominion MS); Every Thursday (World Language)
November: Every Tuesday (Cols Prep for Girls); Every Thursday (Yorktown)
